COVID-19 Response

At The Virginian, the health and well-being of residents and team members is our highest priority at all times. We continue to take proper prevention and preparedness steps related to COVID-19.

What is The Virginian doing to prepare for any incidence of COVID-19?

We know that this disease most dramatically impacts older adults – the people we serve. We will continue to follow infection control guidance from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) as well as our local and state health agencies.

Earlier this year, we successfully completed a safe and efficient distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine to residents and employees in partnership with local and state health agencies. As new information develops, we will continue coordinating with our pharmacy partners and local and state health authorities to provide additional information or updates directly to residents and employees. The Virginian will work with residents and employees who qualify and want to receive a COVID-19 booster shot as recommended by the CDC.

Recently, we announced a requirement for all employees to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 by October 16, 2021, in accordance with the policy of our management company Life Care Services (LCS), one of the nation’s largest senior living providers with more than 140 communities. We are proud that 94% of our employees were fully vaccinated, even prior to this requirement. Protecting the health and safety of our residents and employees remains our top priority, and requiring vaccinations, including for any new employees, will help ensure we stay true to that focus. As new highly transmissible COVID-19 variants persist, we believe the COVID-19 vaccination is essential to protecting all of our residents and employees.

We continue to be steadfast in taking every precaution to protect the community from the spread of COVID-19. Employees continue to wear masks and undergo screenings at the start of each shift. LCS’s newest signature experience, EverSafe 360°, also demonstrates our commitment to providing an industry-leading experience focused on enhancing the well-being, security, and safety of residents and employees.

COVID-19 Actions:

Through EverSafe 360° – the new standard of senior safety – LCS is raising the bar to reimagine and innovate the way we live and work together, taking proactive measures to elevate the standard of safety for seniors.

The program includes establishment of a national Medical Advisory Board, which consists of a team of interdisciplinary experts, including physicians and scientists who specialize in epidemiology, mental health, infectious disease and indoor air quality.

At The Virginian, we are connecting with our local and state health agencies on a regular basis.

Those who enter the community, are screened to inquire whether they have any symptoms or potential known exposures. They are not allowed to enter if they answer yes to any of these questions.

We continue our focus on infection control and prevention, following the guidelines from the CDC.

We continue to actively monitor and report respiratory illnesses across our organization.

We are regularly sharing updated information on COVID-19 with our residents and others in the communities that we serve.

We have an emergency response plan in place should we need to implement it.

Through it all, we have focused on providing the experiences Life Care Services® communities are known for. We remain dedicated to serving our seniors, first and foremost, and we’ve adapted to the challenges in today’s world to ensure that never changes.

At The Virginian, as with all LCS communities, we believe “Experience is Everything”. We remain inspired by the many ways our employees ensure residents feel connected and cared for as we continue to address the presence of the COVID-19 virus in our society.

World-Class Memory Care at The Virginian

At The Virginian, one of the leading senior living communities in Northern Virginia, we’ve developed a new approach to caring for our cognitively-impaired residents.

We’re taking memory care within assisted living in Fairfax, VA to the next level with our innovative Heartfelt CONNECTIONS – A Memory Care Program®. This program is designed to harness the retained abilities of residents rather than focus on the ones they’ve lost. It is a therapeutically designed program that focuses on likes/dislikes, family and past interests, occupations, and other factors that allow our team members to know and uniquely understand each resident.

Individualized Care

As part of Heartfelt CONNECTIONS, and as one of the premier senior assisted living facilities in Northern Virginia, our specially trained staff seek to learn every detail about our residents. This includes the use of LifeBio™, involving residents, loved ones, and staff in an evidence-based approach to creating an autobiography for each resident, and is shown to reduce loneliness, and increase social connectedness, feelings of happiness, and overall wellbeing.

By focusing on the health, social, and emotional needs of each resident, we can develop the high-quality, personalized care and daily activities they need and deserve.

Intentional Design

Every aspect of our community has been designed with the varying stages of memory loss in mind, including color-coded cueing, wayfinding “Neighborhoods,” life skill stations, personalized memory boxes, interactive artwork, a private beauty salon, and a dual-themed reminiscence courtyard allowing residents to “relax in the backyard” or “walk in the park,” all within a secured setting.

State-of-the-art technology includes circadian lighting to assist residents in achieving peaceful days and restful nights. For fun, OBIE is an award-winning video gaming system that can be played through simple hand motion, with games scientifically designed for individuals at all levels of memory care.

Superior Amenities

In addition to the care, programs, and features of our memory care program, residents and families of The Virginian can have access to all of the amenities of our full continuum of care community, including our beautifully landscaped grounds, multiple dining venues, transportation services, and more.

A Virginian Resident Remembers How TV’s Jeopardy Changed Her Life.

In 1967, ‘Jeopardy’ was a relatively new daytime TV game show, and Barbara McKenney was a young stay-at-home mom raising three small children. Intrigued by the new show, Barbara decided to take the test necessary to qualify as a contestant. She learned later that she would appear on the show the following summer. Though she was looking forward to competing on nationwide television, she never imagined how that one appearance would change the direction of her life.

The Virginian Senior Living Community Launches Obie For Seniors Interactive Gaming System

The Virginian, the premier senior living community in Northern Virginia announced today that it is bringing Obie for Seniors technology by EyeClick to its community. The installation is part of The Virginian’s ‘high touch, high tech’ $56.5 million renovation which will include a state-of-the-art expanded Memory Care program. The Virginian will be among the first senior living communities in the nation, and first in the D.C. Metro area, to utilize the technology which has been demonstrated by senior staff to improve cognitive stimulation and motor skills, while keeping seniors active and motivated to participate in activities.

Obie for Seniors is an award-winning interactive gaming system that turns any physical space into an immersive and highly entertaining experience for seniors. The technology was developed for use in early childhood education and is now being adapted for seniors. Obie projects original games onto any surface – tabletops, floors, and walls – encouraging active play through touching, moving, and hand-eye coordination skills. The device uses sensors to identify movements such as tapping or touching and offers a suite of games adapted with different modes and levels which can support people with vast needs such as movement, cognition, and social interaction.

The system is among the newest “Nana” Technology™ being adopted for use in the United States, after successful applications in Europe for individuals with Alzheimer’s and related dementia. “Nana” Technology is microchip-based technology designed, intended, or that can otherwise be used to improve the quality of life for older adults.

According to Andrew Carle, Executive Director at The Virginian, “The addition of Obie for Seniors to our Memory Care milieu will not only significantly upgrade the quality of care for our residents but highlight our commitment to offering state-of-the-art technology at The ‘new’ Virginian.”

Mr. Carle has been instrumental in bringing Obie for Seniors to The Virginian’s Memory Care program. He serves as lead instructor and founder of the nation’s only graduate Concentration in Senior Living Administration, within the Georgetown University Program in Aging & Health. In 2004, he coined the term “Nana” Technology and has consulted on technologies for older adults with companies including APPLE, Nintendo, GTX Corporation, and Vigorous Mind, among others.

“After deploying Obie for Seniors across nearly two dozen senior living facilities in the US, we gathered data from senior care staff on the impact on residents, and opinions on the future of interactive technology,” said Ariel Almos, Founder and CEO of EyeClick. He added,” Senior care staff have let us know they have observed an improvement in residents’ social behavior, cognitive stimulation, and movement, which will precipitate further exciting developments in technology for seniors.”

Obie for Seniors is installed in senior care centers globally, with 94% of senior care staff reporting that residents experience a positive increase in well-being after engaging with its interactive games. EyeClick recently unveiled an advanced data analytics system for Obie that provides care staff the additional ability to analyze user’s activity and provide meaningful treatment data for range of motion, overall activity level, memory, and distractions and play errors.

Obie for Seniors has received numerous awards for its innovative solution to enhancing quality of life for older adults, including first place in LeadingAge California’s 2021 People Choice Award, first place in the Mediterranean Towers Ventures’s Agetech ‘Startup of the Year’ Competition 2021, among others.

The Benefits of Renting Instead of Buying During Retirement

Contrary to what many believe, renting in a senior living community is better for your wallet during retirement. Not only is it a better deal financially, but renting in a retirement community also allows for your maintenance, healthcare and entertainment to be included under one fee each month.

Purchasing a home, or paying an exorbitant entrance fee, just adds more onto that monthly expense. Below we’ve gathered several reasons for you to choose renting over buying in retirement, so you can put your mind, body, and wallet at ease.

Continuing Care For Your Health

There’s no question that our health changes over time, especially as you age into your retirement years. Renting within an exclusive retirement community like The Virginian means a variety of healthcare options catered to your needs over time.

Most offer a broad range of care within their community complex. You can receive around-the-clock care and rehabilitation or choose independent and assisted living, depending on your health needs. These Continuum of Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) provide the convenience of quality care in one place. Instead of forcing you to travel from a house to a healthcare facility, your care can come to you or be only steps away.

Put your mind and family at ease by knowing that you’ll always have access to quality healthcare close by.

Spend Less Without More Mortgage Payments

Owning your home is an achievement many don’t want to lose in retirement. It might seem like a smart move: selling your home, buying a house within a senior living community, and adding on a new mortgage. You’ll get to enjoy the amenities and benefits of the community while owning a home on the property. Unfortunately, choosing to buy will put a hefty dent into your savings.

In the long-run, renting within the senior living community will save you more money and give you the freedom to find the right fit for you. According to an AgingCare article on renting or buying in retirement complexes, it’s also important to be aware of the application and community fees. These fees are often nonrefundable, and must be paid regardless of whether you decide to rent or buy.

You’ll save quite a bit by not only living closer to options that are available for your changing health needs, you also get to enjoy the same amenities as homeowners in an upscale retirement community, so why pay more?

The Ease of No Maintenance

Rent, along with the community fees you pay upfront to live in a luxurious retirement apartment complex, means that your home maintenance and entertainment are included. There’s no need to worry about paying for repairs or renovations.

While purchasing a home on a retirement community’s property might have maintenance and extra space included, the renovations, repairs and sale of the home are ultimately the owner’s responsibility.

The best part about saving money through renting a high-end apartment, is the close access you get to the community and all of its perks. You’ll be steps away from your neighbors, community excursions, dining and events hosted within the complex.

Should I Sell My House and Rent When I Retire

Expand your horizons beyond whether you should stay in your home or rent an apartment during retirement. While long-term price should be a factor in your living options, if you’re looking to protect those hard-earned savings and yourself from physical stress, then renting an apartment in a retirement community is a great option.

Put your mind and body at ease after years of working so hard to get to this point. It’s time to take care of yourself and enjoy life without the stress of home maintenance costs and more. Allow yourself to rent, get acquainted with your new community, and lifestyle in a luxury apartment.

Senior Independent Living Communities in Fairfax VA

In retirement, you want to be well taken care of, reasonably budget, and live comfortably. At The Virginian, your apartment will contain a wide-range of upscale amenities for you to feel right at home.

Just a few of the personal amenities you can enjoy in your new place include fully equipped kitchens with stainless steel appliances, spacious walk-in closets, large picture windows, and in-unit washer and dryers. You’ll also have access to all of the museums, dining and excursions Northern Virginia and Fairfax County have to offer.
