As part of our collaboration with the Parkinson Foundation of the National Capital Area (PFNCA), this new initiative, which will launch in April 2024, reflects The Virginian’s commitment to providing comprehensive support and fostering a vibrant community. Program participants will benefit from in-person and livestream exercise sessions alongside engaging activities, including quarterly lectures, a speaker series, and an annual education conference. The program is open to residents of The Virginian and PFNCA members.
The Virginian’s Parkinson’s Fitness program team members are certified in PWR!Moves (Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery), a cutting-edge Parkinson’s disease-specific exercise program that holds promise to slow disease progression, improve symptoms, restore function, and increase longevity and quality of life. Our staff is also trained in LSVT BIG® and LSVT LOUD® therapy, specialized evidence-based therapies that focus on addressing motor and speech-related symptoms associated with Parkinson’s.
Weekly exercise classes will be offered to promote physical well-being and cultivate a sense of community. These classes will be led by The Virginian’s Fitness Director, who brings over 30 years of experience in Parkinson’s programming. Three levels of classes will be offered, and participants will receive personalized attention to address their unique needs.
Residents at The Virginian and members of PFNCA can also join live exercise classes via livestream to help them gain flexibility and convenience in maintaining their fitness routine.
Quarterly lectures will help participants stay informed on various topics related to managing life with Parkinson’s.
Throughout the year, The Virginian will host talks on Parkinson’s for the local Fairfax community, promoting greater awareness and understanding.
Participation in this annual conference will offer valuable insights and expert guidance on the various aspects of living with Parkinson’s.
Recognizing the vital role nutrition plays in managing Parkinson's, The Virginian’s registered dietitian will collaborate with residents to address their special dietary requirements and nutritional needs.
To address the speech-related challenges associated with Parkinson's, The Virginian offers a comprehensive speech therapy program. Our dedicated speech therapists work closely with residents, not only focusing on traditional speech exercises but also providing support in activities such as swallowing techniques, texture modifications, and personalized exercises. Additionally, residents benefit from the innovative LSVT LOUD® program, which is specially designed to help them navigate daily communication with others.
The Virginian’s fitness team members are certified in LSVT BIG® and LSVT LOUD® programs which have shown to greatly improve the overall functioning of individuals with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions. From specialized Parkinson's movement classes to engaging and social activities including ballroom dancing, pickleball and tai chi classes, residents can participate in a variety of programs specifically tailored for Parkinson's wellness. The PWR! program helps residents improve posture, weight shifting, trunk rotation and transition movements. The LSVT BIG® program, which is also customized to the unique goals of each resident, targets both gross and fine motor skills. These diverse classes aim to promote balance, coordination, and enjoyable physical activity within our supportive community environment.
For a more personalized and targeted approach to physical therapy, residents with Parkinson's can benefit from The Virginian Rehabilitation and Wellness program, offering a wide range of full-service outpatient physical therapy and rehabilitation services. Our therapists work one-on-one privately with our residents on a Personalized Exercise Program (PEP) to focus on key areas of importance. The Virginian’s occupational therapy and speech therapy initiatives, coupled with rehabilitation and wellness-focused efforts, collectively offer strong support for residents managing Parkinson's.
